How to appraise a loan application

Version 1 · Updated 21 Jun 2026

Summary

Work a loan application through its appraisal stages — from pre-qualification to funding — reviewing the member and loan details at each step.

About 4 minutes to read. Also called: loan appraisal, assess a loan, loan stages, pre-qualification, credit decision.

Prerequisites

  • Sign in to CAMS Admin with a role that can view and edit loan applications.
  • A submitted loan application waiting to be appraised.

Step-by-step

  1. Sign in to CAMS Admin.
  2. In the left menu, open Accounts → Applications. The loan applications list opens, with tabs for All, Approved, Pending, and Rejected.
  3. Click the application you want to appraise (by its Application Id or the member's name). The application opens on the Application Details tab.

A loan application's appraisal view: the loan details, the member panel, and the five appraisal stages — Pre Qualification, Loan Application, Credit Decision, Quality Control, and Loan Funding — each with an Edit button

  1. Review the top section — the member's Name and Member Id, the Product, the Status, and the assigned Loan Officer — and the tabs Application Details, Loan Document, Charges, and History.
  2. Read the Loan Application Details: amount, nominal interest rate, tenure, interest calculation method, loan type, economic sector and sub-sector, debt capacity, and purpose. Check the Member panel (status, branch, and existing/outstanding loans) and the Disbursement destination.
  3. Work down the appraisal stages, each showing Assigned To, Status, and Comments:
  • Stage 1 — Pre Qualification Process
  • Stage 2 — Loan Application
  • Stage 3 — Credit Decision
  • Stage 4 — Quality Control
  • Stage 5 — Loan Funding

Click Edit on the current stage to record your assessment and comments and set its status. Saving moves the application on to the next stage.

Note: Appraisal is the assessment that leads to a decision. Granting the loan and paying it out are separate steps — see How to approve loan applications and How to disburse a loan.

Common pitfalls & FAQ

  • Which stage is the application on? The active stage is the one with a Pending status assigned to someone; earlier stages show as done. Use the History tab to see what's happened so far.
  • The Edit button does nothing / I can't change a stage. That stage may be assigned to another officer, or your role may not allow editing it. Check the Assigned To name and your permissions.
  • What's the difference between appraisal and approval? Appraisal is the multi-stage assessment (pre-qualification, credit decision, quality control); approval is the decision to grant the loan, which follows.
  • Where do I see the member's documents? On the Loan Document tab; fees and interest are under Charges.
