How to add an SMS segment
Summary
Create a segment, a saved group of members, so one send reaches all of them at once. About 3 minutes · 7 steps. Also called: group, audience, member list, recipient group, mailing list.
Prerequisites
- Access to Messages (see The Message Service screen).
- The detail that identifies the group, such as an email address the filter can match.
Step-by-step
- Sign in to CAMS.
- In the left menu, click Messages, then click Create Segment in the header. Wait for the form to load.
- In Name, type a unique, recognisable name. It is what you pick in the Segment list when you send.
- Add a Description if it helps a colleague understand who the group is for. This is optional.
- Under Create Filters, open the Filter dropdown (it reads Select Filter) and choose the filter you want. Extra rule fields appear underneath.

Figure 1: The Create Segment form, where you type a Name, add a Description, then choose a Filter under Create Filters before saving - Fill in the rule fields that appeared, for example an email address the rule has to equal. Add another filter to narrow the group further.
- Click Save, then open the Segments tab and check your new row is there. Each row shows Name, Alias, Date and an Enable / Disable setting.
Warning: A wrong filter sends messages to the wrong people. Run a Test Message before the first real send (see How to reach out to members via SMS).
Common pitfalls & FAQ
- My segment reaches nobody. One rule that is too narrow, or two rules that contradict each other, can match no one. Edit the rules.
- I cannot pick the segment when sending. Check it saved to the Segments tab and its Enable / Disable setting is on.
- How do I change or remove it later? Open the row's action menu on the Segments tab. Edit changes the name, description and rules; Delete removes it. Only delete a segment nobody sends to.
