Joy: Hello, and welcome to The Growth Room — a short podcast from Wakandi about one thing: growing your SACCO or microfinance institution. I'm Joy, your host. Every episode, we take one practical way to grow — more members, stronger savings, more lending done right — and break it down in just a few minutes. Today's growth opportunity is hiding in plain sight: the loans your members are quietly taking from apps like Fuliza and Tala — money that could be growing YOUR loan book instead. To dig in, I've got James with me, who works with SACCOs and MFIs right across East Africa. James, welcome.
James: Thanks, Joy. Good to be here.
Joy: So let's start simple. What is this "silent leak"?
James: Picture a SACCO's best members — loyal, saving every single week. Then a school fee or a hospital bill lands, and they need cash today. They don't come to the SACCO. They open Fuliza or Tala, tap a button, and the money's there in seconds. That's the leak. It's quiet, because nobody complains — but every one of those loans is interest that should have grown the SACCO, walking out the door to a mobile lender.
Joy: And it's a growth problem, not just a money problem?
James: Exactly. That's lending your loan book never sees — so it never grows. And worse, once a member borrows somewhere else, they start to see the SACCO as the place to save, and someone else as the place to borrow. You stop being their first call.
Joy: So how does a SACCO turn that leak into growth? Give us the practical steps.
James: Three things. First, speed. Members don't run to Fuliza for the rate — they run because they can't wait. If they can't get a small loan from you in minutes, you'll lose the small loans. Second, reach. These emergencies happen on a Sunday, far from the branch — so members need to borrow from the phone in their hand, even a basic feature phone. And third, tell them. Many members don't even know the SACCO offers a quick loan, so a simple SMS — "need cash fast? dial this code" — brings that borrowing back home.
Joy: And where does a platform like Wakandi come in?
James: It makes those three possible. With Wakandi, that emergency loan can live right on the member's phone, by USSD or app — so the SACCO captures the lending it was losing, keeps the interest, and grows the loan book, instead of handing it all to Fuliza. Same member, same need — grown by the SACCO this time.
Joy: So if our listeners do one thing this week to grow?
James: Ask how fast a member can actually borrow from you. If the honest answer is "days" — that's your leak, and your easiest growth. Fix the speed, the reach, and the message.
Joy: Love it. That's this episode of The Growth Room. Thanks, James — and thank you for listening.
