Contribute to your share account by USSD

Summary

Pay money into your SACCO share account from any phone, using the USSD menu. About 3 minutes - 8 steps. Also called: buy shares, share capital, contribution, phone menu, no internet.

Prerequisites

  • The phone with the number you registered with your SACCO.
  • An active share account.
  • Enough money to cover the contribution and any fee.
  • Your SACCO's USSD shortcode. Ask your SACCO if you do not have it.

Step-by-step

  1. Pick up the phone with the number you registered with your SACCO. The system matches that number against your member record.
  2. Dial your SACCO's USSD shortcode. The menu opens.
  3. Choose the share account service. The menu also offers balance inquiry, savings and loans.
  4. Choose the option to make a contribution.
  5. Choose the share account you want to pay into. The list shows the name and number of each active account.
  6. Type the amount you want to contribute and send it. The system checks the amount against the limits on that account.
  7. Read the summary. It shows the transaction details and the total, including any fee.
  8. Confirm to complete the payment, or cancel if something is wrong. You will get a confirmation message.

Note: Contributions are processed in real time. Keep the confirmation message.

Common pitfalls & FAQ

  • My share account is not in the list. Only active accounts appear. Ask your SACCO to activate it.
  • The amount was refused. Every share account has a smallest and a largest amount allowed, and online transaction limits apply as well. Try an amount inside those limits, or ask your SACCO about raising them.
  • The total is more than I typed. Your SACCO may add a convenience fee. The total including the fee is shown before you confirm, and you can cancel there.
  • The menu closed before I finished. USSD sessions time out on their own. Dial the shortcode again and start over.
  • It says it does not know me. The system checks your phone number, your account status and your SACCO membership. Use your registered phone, and ask your SACCO to check your details.
  • How do I check the balance afterwards? Dial the shortcode again and use the balance option. A share account shows the total share value, any blocked amount, the currency and the account number.
