Pay to an account by USSD

Summary

Send money into a SACCO account with Pay to Account on the main USSD menu. About 2 minutes · 5 steps. Also called: transfer, send money, pay a member.

Prerequisites

  • The phone with your registered number, with money in your mobile money.
  • The account number you are paying into — confirmed, not guessed.
  • A USSD PIN. See Set or reset your USSD PIN.

Step-by-step

  1. Dial your network's code (Kenya *384*25611#, Uganda, MTN *165*4*4#, Uganda, Airtel *185*7*3*3#). The number you dial from is your sign-in.

  2. Reply 1 for Pay to Account and send. This sits on the main menu, before you pick a SACCO.

  3. Type the account number you are paying into and send.

  4. Type the amount and send. The phone shows the details to check, with the total including any fee.

  5. Check the account number and the amount, confirm, then approve the payment (your mobile-money prompt, or your PIN). A confirmation message arrives when the money has gone through.

Warning: Money sent to a wrong account number goes to whoever owns that account, and payments are hard to reverse. If anything looks off on the confirmation screen, cancel there.

Common pitfalls & FAQ

  • I'm not sure of the account number. Don't guess. Confirm it with the person or the SACCO first.
  • Is this different from Pay to Reference Number? Yes. Pay to Account takes an account number; Pay to Reference Number takes a reference the SACCO gave you. Use whichever matches what you were given.
  • My amount was refused. Payments have smallest and largest limits, plus an online transaction limit, all set by your SACCO. Ask them what yours are.
  • The payment failed. Check you have enough in your mobile money and try again. If money left your phone but did not arrive, contact your SACCO with the date, amount and mobile-money reference.
