Loan product charges, stages and accounting

Summary

Finish a loan product: attach its charges, set who handles each workflow stage, and map its ledgers so loans post to the right accounts.

About 4 minutes · 7 steps. Also called: loan fees, product accounting, ledger mapping, approval stages.

Prerequisites

  • A product started in How to add a loan product.
  • Charges created on the Fee & Penalties tab. See Fees and rates.
  • Your Chart of Accounts ledgers. See Chart of Accounts setup.

Step-by-step

  1. Sign in to CAMS.

  2. In the left menu, expand Settings, then click Products, and open your product on the Loan Product tab. Or carry on in the open create form.

  3. In Guarantors and Collateral, set the guarantor requirement, the Minimum Number of Guarantors, the Collateral Type and the Collateral Ratio. Staff record the actual people and assets on each loan — see How to add collateral and guarantors to a loan.

  4. In Loan Product Charges, attach the processing fees and service charges this product carries.

  5. In Loan Product Stages, each stage (Fee & Payments, Funding) shows a Default Role and Default Assignee: who handles it before disbursement. Match them to your approvers.

  6. In Accounting Settings, map each bucket to a Chart of Accounts ledger. The buckets: Loan Portfolio Account, Accrued Account, Income From Interest, Expenses/Losses Written Off, Overpayment Account, Loan Suspense Account and Income from write-off.

Note: Match the account type. Portfolio, Accrued and Suspense are Assets, Income From Interest is an Income ledger, Write-off is an Expense, and Overpayment is a Liability. The wrong type posts loans to the wrong place.

  1. Scroll to the very end, check every section, then click Save and set Status to Active. Loan officers and tellers can now pick the product.

Tip: Required fields often sit below the first screen. Scroll all the way down before you save.

Common pitfalls & FAQ

  • A charge is missing from the list. Create it on the Fee & Penalties tab first, then reopen the form.
  • Officers cannot see the product. Check Status is Active. The name shows in the Product column under Accounts > Loans.
  • A Quick Loan campaign does not offer it. Campaigns pick products through a Credit Product Policy under Settings > Policies.
